Networking is Overrated
The conventional wisdom suggests that the “larger your network, the larger your net worth” is now overrated.
Let’s leave it behind. Or at least for me.
It’s a world where connections are often measured in quantity rather than quality, where the click of a ‘Connect’ button is mistaken for genuine relationship building.
This approach to networking is not only overrated but can be profoundly misleading.
The problem with an oversized network is that it’s often a mile wide and an inch deep. It’s filled with contacts you barely know, with whom you’ve exchanged business cards or LinkedIn connections, but with whom you have no real relationship.
Think of the superficial LinkedIn connections you receive on a daily.
These connections are like weak signals in a noisy world; they’re there, but they don’t enrich or amplify your message. They don’t provide the depth of support, insight, or opportunity that a close-knit circle of deep connections can.
Deep connections, on the other hand, are built on mutual respect, genuine interest, and a shared journey. These are the relationships that offer substantial support when you need it, whether it’s a personal challenge or a professional setback.
They’re the ones who will champion your ideas, offer honest feedback, and open doors to opportunities that are truly aligned with your values and goals.
In a landscape filled with noise, these connections are your signal — clear, strong, and resonant.
So, how do we cultivate these deep connections?
It starts with intentionality.
Be selective in whom you choose to connect with, focusing on those who align with your values and aspirations.
Invest time and energy into these relationships. Show genuine interest in their journey, offer your support, and be willing to share your own vulnerabilities.
Remember, the strength of a relationship is not measured by the number of interactions but by the quality of those interactions.
It’s about depth, not breadth.
